Infinet Talker was one of the first chat services on the web.
A demonstration of a nascent version of Talker, written by Glenn Davis, was mentioned in the minutes of a Hampton Roads Internet Association meeting in February of 1995. The site was quite successful earning it a spot on Netscape's What's Cool link list.
In a short while a community began to develop and blossom at Talker. Friendships formed across vast distances. At least one marriage occurred as a result of users meeting here
After a while Talker was largely abandoned by Infinet in favor of Broadcast Chat service. I don't recall the exact date Talker was taken offline and though it would return it was only for a short while. Thereafter Pete Desnoyers, still working at Infinet, opened the beloved SpeakEasy which to most of us was just another version of Talker. When Pete left Infinet SpeakEasy was closed and it seemed the end of the road had been reached yet again. At that point I requested Pete's permission to revive Talker and since that time Talker has remained online and little has changed, for better or worse.
More coming soon ...
